Casino Chips - Hard Rock L.V.
Back back to Collectors Corner   Back back to the Cellar

To celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the Rocky Horror Picture Show 20th Century Fox held a Convention at 'The Joint' in the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.A. Along with the usual T-Shirts and other merchandise was a unique souvenir of the days proceedings. The Hard Rock produced two limited edition Casino chips. Word got out that these were limited edition chips and as well as the fans attending the convention, several collectors and traders of casino chips joined the long line of fans waiting to get to the cashiers window at the Hard Rock, each limited to buying a single $25 chip and ten $5 chips. We spoke to one collector that had already been through the queue twice with his wife to buy as many as possible with the view to making a profit from these rare chips. Quite a few fans did get the chips, but expect them to appear on ebay and amazon auctions at quite a large mark up on face value. On Tuesday 17th October www.ebay.com had 21 $25 chips on auction, at bids ranging from $50 to $80 dollars each, that's five percent of the $25 chips made!

The $25 chip features a picture of Riff Raff (Richard O'Brien) one side and the tag line "25 Years of Absolute Pleasure", the reverse shows the lips and the Rocky Horror Picture Show logo, to the right of the lips is the legend "LTD 500" meaning a limited edition of 500 only. This could have meant the fans attending the event having a chance of buying one each, so long as they beat the dealers and collectors to them. The chips sold out the night they went on sale, Saturday 14th October, 2000.

The $5 chip features a picture of Dr Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry) in classic Frank pose, and was limited to 3,000 chips only. I always said one of Riff was worth at least five of Frank, and here's the proof. The chips are shown at more or less life size on this page. How many of these do you think people are going to use to place their bets on the tables at the Hard Rock Casino then?!!

If you find a chip and it's not too overpriced, they do make an excellent collectors item and souvenir of the 25th Anniversary of the movie. Just don't pay too much on an auction.
