Michael Aspel's career began as a Radio Actor with the BBC in Cardiff in 1954. He became a nationally known personality on both television and radio, firstly, as a television newsreader and, subsequently, as a presenter of numerous television and radio programmes including Family Favourites, Miss World, Crackerjack, Personal Cinema, Aspel and Co, Today, Ask Aspel, and the BAFTA Awards.
He presented a daily programme for London's Capital Radio for ten years, up until September 1984, and regular programmes for BBC Radio and LBC.
He compered the highly successful Give Us a Clue programme for Thames Television.
He entered into an exclusive contract with London Weekend Television to present several programmes including The Six O'Clock Show, Childs Play and his talk show Aspel and Co.. Subsequently, he presented Strange.... But True? about the supernatural and Caught on Camera where extraordinary events were recorded on film and video. He also presented Lights Camera Action for ITV, which was a series of six programmes to celebrate the centenary of the cinema. Michael also presented Going for a Song for the BBC.
He succeeded Eamonn Andrews as presenter of This Is Your Life in 1988 and the programme was consistently high in the ratings. Michael is currently hosting the hugely popular Antiques Roadshow for the BBC.
On stage he has appeared in Private Lives and has co-starred in a run of Say Who You Are and has narrated Side By Side by Sondheim.
He bee been voted Variety Club ITV personality of the Year and TV Times Television Personality of the Year.
Michael has received many awards over the years including the O.B.E. in 1993 for services to broadcasting and in 1996 was voted into the the Royal Television Society Hall of Fame for outstanding services to television. In 2002 Michael was elected Honorary Fellow of Cardiff University.
