2006 celebrates TimeWarp’s Eighteenth Anniversary and from what had gone before it seemed certain that there should be.........a picnic.

So then, where to have this little get-together?
Wimbledon Common?...........Nope that was taken by the Wombles.
Sloane Square?.........They wouldn’t let us wear the costumes.
Oakley Court, original movie location for the Rocky Horror Picture Show?...........Could be!

Oakley CourtYes to celebrate our birthday we had a Picnic at Oakley Court on Sunday 27th August 2006 (that was the day before the Bank Holiday). For this inaugural event we arranged an amazing discount offer for accommodation at Oakley Court and the Picnic itself with rooms at a special rate for fans and their families. TimeWarp members had advance notice on this event, but everyone was welcome to attend. The only thing they needed to provide was a rug to sit on, we even brought the cake.

We made sure that costume was permitted if you wanted to dress, you just had to cover up when in the public parts of the Hotel if you were in the very skimpy outfits. Here's a little image of some of the first attendees to arrive at the picnic posing for the local press photographer. The whole day was a great success and we're now looking to make this an annual fan club event.

The Rocky Horror Picture ShowWell a picnic in the afternoon at Oakley Court, how could we improve on that? How about watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show at a late night screening just for those staying overnight for the picnic? Yep, those that attended got to see the movie where it was filmed with no extra charge for the screening. Oh yes, we were also joined by Richard O'Brien himself!

A little more detail......

TimeWarp was formed in 1988 and the first newsletter went out in August that year. You can read all about the fan club here. To celebrate our birthday year we decided on a little picnic at Oakley Court and we hoped to get a couple of dozen fans joining us for the event. In the end we had forty six people signed up for the event. Rooms were on a very special discount rate for the attendees and the price even included all the food for the picnic and breakfast the next morning. CakePrices worked out for two people sharing at sixty nine pounds each (coincidence?). There was plenty of food for all and that desert was to die for! We also had an 18th birthday cake made for the attendees.

We had intended to just have the picnic and allow as much time as possible for people to socialize, take photographs and generally do their own thing. We did however decide to have a chat with 20th Century Fox about screening the movie on DVD at Oakley Court if possible. It took until about a week before the event to confirm this part of the entertainment and it was intended as an extra rather than part of the original offer.

We brought our own av equipment and Oakley Court provided a nice screen for the film showing. I'd like to deny now that this whole event was an excuse to allow me to buy a High Definition video projector. The room we used proved great for the screening and the sound was not too shabby either. We found out the next day that they could hear us in reception, but no one minded.

We also played a couple of videos before the screening which we'd been given permission to show, the Time Warp video featuring Nicholas Parsons and co. from a previous recording release and Richard O'Brien's Angel in Me video (did you spot Stephanie and Mike as extras in that one?)

Richard meets the fansWe'd spoken to Richard O'Brien himself during the previous week and he said he would be delighted to come down and join us for the picnic or movie screening. In the end he arrived an hour or so after the picnic itself and joined a few of us on the lawn for a chat. Richard stayed to do a nice introduction to the screening, pose for photographs and sign loads of autographs. Many thanks to Richard for all the kind words at the film introduction.

We'd had the cake cut up and it was served out at the screening. The movie section of the day ended just before midnight with a final Time Warp for everyone to dance to and people set of in search of their beds, or in the case of certain folks we won't name, more alcohol.

BadgeEveryone that attended the day got a little souvenir badge to prove they were there, the badges were even marked with the year of the event to make them more unique. Wear your I Picnicked at Frank's Castle badges with pride.

Stephanie and I would like to thank all that attended for joining us and helping celebrate the fan club's first eighteen years. Everyone we spoke to had a great time and we're already looking at another Rocky Horror Picnic Show in 2007. You can read a few comments from attendees below.
